Canary vs Nest Cam: Pros & Cons and Verdict
Canary and Nest are well-known for manufacturing best-selling, top-performing and well-built security cameras. These two companies are highly-trusted and well-established brands in the smart home industry, and both of them have thousands of satisfied customers.
So let’s find out how the most successful security cameras of Canary and Nest compare. We need to find out the similarities, differences, and pros and cons to decide which one takes the top spot.
1. Installation Process
The first topic we need to discuss is the installation processes of Nest Cam Indoor and Canary All-in-One Home Security. Today, no one buys a smart home product that takes ages to set up and activate. Everyone wants a DIY product with a simple installation process with zero complications.
Setting up Canary All-in-One is a simple process that takes just a few minutes to complete. There are just three steps to activate your Canary security camera:
- Use the USB cord to plug Canary All-in-One into a power source
- Use the yellow cord to connect Canary to your smartphone device
- Download the mobile application and follow the simple steps
That’s all it takes to activate your Canary security camera. If for any reason you get lost during the setup process, simply refer to the excellent user’s manual included with your Canary package.
There have been several instances of Canary owners reporting problems during the setup process. The main issue was with pairing Canary and the smartphone. Solving it took around a day, and we also reached out to Canary’s support team.
Nest Cam Indoor
Nest Cam is the most straightforward DIY camera on the market, and it takes only a minute to complete the setup process. Setting up Nest Cam is so simple that it’s impossible to get lost or confused during the process. All you need to do is:
- Pick a spot and plug your Nest Cam in
- Download the mobile app for iOS or Android and follow the simple instructions
If any complications arise, try referring to the user’s manual included in your Nest Cam package.
Today, it’s essential for modern smart home shoppers to purchase products that look attractive and eye-catching. So both Canary and Nest should look eye-pleasing and improve the overall look of your home interior.
Standing 6 inches tall and measuring 3 inches in diameter, Canary is available in three colours – black, white and silver. Canary All-in-One is a uniquely designed security camera that looks slightly weird and attracts a lot of attention.

Canary All-in-One doesn’t look like a traditional security camera, and it might raise questions like ‘What’s that?’. I’ve met several Canary owners and seen how well this device fits in with their living space. As expected, Canary looked very stylish and attractive.
If you’re looking for a security camera that can improve the looks of your house and also protect it from unwanted intruders, Canary can be an excellent addition. Every Canary owner I’ve talked to mentioned how it made their visitors curious and attracted admiring comments.
Nest Cam Indoor
Nest Cam is another beautifully designed security camera that is one of the best-looking devices on the market. The dimensions of Nest Cam are 2.9 x 4.5 x 2.9 inches, and it weighs 0.45 pounds.
I own this security camera and can say from experience that it’s one of the most charming and eye-catching products on the market.
Unlike Canary, Nest Cam looks like a traditional security camera. The solid green light indicates that your Nest Cam Indoor is successfully connected to your Wi-Fi. On the lower side is the brand name; in the middle, you can see the camera lens which has a 130-degree field of view.
The next topic we need to write about is the features of Nest Cam and Canary. We need to know if these security cameras have the essential features and how they differ from each other. Hence we’ve created a simple chart that shows the features of both Nest Cam and Canary All-in-One.
So, as you see in the chart above, both of these security cameras have some outstanding and powerful features. For instance, the 1080p HD camera makes both of them quite attractive; and having additional features like the ’90 Decibel Siren’ (Canary) and ‘Activity Zones’ (Nest Cam) makes them stand out from their competitors.
It’s also essential to be informed about the video recording capabilities of Canary and Nest Cam. If these two security cameras can’t perform at an acceptable level, purchasers will look for alternative products. So let’s find out how well Canary All-in-One and Nest Cam Indoor record.
Like other smart security cameras, Canary offers motion detection and alerts. When we tested Canary in action, it regularly sent false alarms that were triggered by harmless movement. That’s a serious issue since people might start ignoring the notifications sent by the security camera.
Fortunately, Canary has been working hard to remedy this, and they came up with a good solution. With the newest updates, whenever Canary sends an unnecessary alert (i.e. the camera was triggered by something that you don’t need to know about), you can “educate” the security camera; it will “learn” that you no longer want to receive notifications as a result of that particular kind of trigger.

Plus, Canary has added a sensitivity level adjustment feature in the mobile application, and you can change it as you see fit. It might take a little time for the security camera to understand what type of notifications it should send, but as soon as it does, it’ll make Canary much more productive.
The recording capabilities of Canary are superb. It records in clear quality, and the mobile application allows you to zoom and tilt the camera. If you’re interested in how well Canary All-in-One can record, I’ve dropped a cool video that perfectly demonstrates its capabilities.
Canary All-in-One monitors your home for motion, temperature and air quality. If the security camera notices anything wrong, it’ll send you a notification. Canary also has a built-in speaker and a microphone, but unlike Nest Cam, it won’t send sound-activated notifications.
Canary captured sound flawlessly every time we tested it; you can even hear the quieter conversations held in the room.
The Canary’s siren is another cool feature. When the security camera sends a notification, you can check what the alert was, and if it’s something suspicious, you can trigger the siren and call the emergency services. For instance, if there’s a burglar in your house, you can scare them by activating the siren.
The most effective, unique feature of Canary All-in-One is the siren since it enhances the overall security level of your house. If there’s something untoward going on, you can activate the siren and alert the trespasser that they’ve been spotted.

Unfortunately, there’s a severe issue with the siren. Lots of buyers have mentioned the siren being too sensitive, and that at night there can be repeated trigger alerts as a result of false alarms. One of my friends had an awful experience when Canary’s siren was triggered 15 times in a single night.
As for the night vision, Canary records in crystal clear quality, and you’ll have zero trouble figuring what’s going on. The geofencing technology is a neat feature that works quite well. If there’s a registered smartphone within range of the Canary, the security camera will stay in the disarmed mode, but as soon as it detects that you’ve left the house, Canary will automatically switch to ‘armed’.
That’s a cool thing if you think about it. First of all, you don’t need to think about changing the modes manually, and you won’t get hundreds of alerts while watching TV or walking around your home. Plus, it’s uncomfortable when you have the feeling of ‘being watched’ while unwinding at the end of the day, so it’s good to know the camera will automatically switch to ‘disarmed’.
An important issue with Canary is that you shouldn’t connect a lot of security cameras with the mobile application as it won’t work as effectively. I had cases when it became buggy and unpredictable. Sometimes, it even forgot to change modes.
Nest Cam Indoor
I would describe Nest Cam as a game changer. Nest has the best camera capabilities on the market, it takes sharp images and vids, it lets you control motion zones; and if you add on a Nest Aware subscription, it becomes even more capable and competent.
If you’re interested how Nest’s live stream and night vision record, I’ll drop a beautiful video that perfectly illustrates how well Nest Cam Indoor works.
If the 1080p video lags and the app is being a bit tardy in deploying the feed, lower the video quality and it will load a lot faster. The 130-degree field of view of Nest Cam is one of the widest, and the 8x zoom allows the owner to monitor everything in maximum detail. You can view the full-screen stream from your smartphone, tablet or a computer. What I’ve noticed is that the live feed on larger screen appears a bit darker.
Nest Cam has a scheduling feature that allows you to configure when the security camera should record and when it should turn off so that your privacy isn’t interrupted. Another cool feature of Nest Cam is the ability to talk and listen through the camera. In other words, if you’re on vacation and would love to check on your pets or children, you can just say ‘hi’ using your Nest Cam Indoor.
Nest Aware is what makes the Nest Cam more useful and functional. If you own other Nest products, you can create pretty exciting setups. For instance, if the Nest Thermostat goes into the ‘away’ mode, Nest Cam will instantly turn on. You can do the same with Nest Protect. If it detects smoke, Nest Cam will turn on to record everything in its sight.
If you think that particular places of your house trigger false alerts and believe that Nest Cam should focus more on specific areas, you can adjust the motion zones through the mobile application.
The last thing I’d like to discuss here is the perks of Nest Aware. As soon as you subscribe to this excellent service, Nest Cam will start working better. Nest Aware has advanced algorithms and a face-detection feature that makes your security camera unique. It cannot recognise individual faces, but the system makes sure that you receive lesser false alerts and notifications.
Also, you can grab clips taken by the security camera and share them on social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
5. Mobile Application
Having a functional and easy-to-use mobile application is essential for both Canary and Nest. Since we mainly use mobile apps to monitor and check what our security cameras do, it’s critical for those apps to be well-built and easy to navigate. Otherwise, the user experience will be quite low.
Canary’s mobile app works on iOS and Android. There’s also a web app you can access via desktop. What’s more, Canary is one of the rare security cameras that can operate with the Apple Watch.
The interface is straightforward and easy to navigate. It takes no time to understand what’s where. The ‘homepage’ of Canary’s mobile application displays temperature, air quality, and humidity. You can also watch the live feed, or swipe to see previous recordings.
Besides viewing the live feed and reviewing past footage, you can access the ‘Homehealth’ section to view the conditions within your house. For example, ‘Air Quality’ rates the quality of the air. If you light up a cigarette in the room where Canary is, the ‘Air Quality’ will instantly change to ‘very abnormal’.
Canary’s mobile application is flexible, intuitive, easy to use, clean and well-built. The latest updates have made the app even better, and those annoying bugs and glitches that were present in the previous versions are now gone.
The last thing about the app: while watching the live feed, you are presented with two buttons below. One of them reads ‘sound the siren’ and the second one is ’emergency call’. So if you notice something suspicious, you have the essential buttons right there if you need to take immediate action.
Nest Cam Indoor
The mobile application of Nest is superb. It’s something special and unique. Nest’s mobile app is well-built, intuitive and easy to navigate. When you first get your hands on a Nest device, as soon as you download the mobile application, you get a free Nest Aware account. So you’ll have the chance to test the full capabilities of Nest Cam Indoor before deciding whether to go ahead and subscribe to Nest Aware.
Whenever Nest Cam detects activity, it’ll send a notification on your phone saying something like, ‘Nest has detected activity in the kitchen’.

When you first launch the Nest mobile app, it’ll require you to fill specific forms (Name, Zip Code, Location, etc.). If you’re interested in the interface of the mobile app, I’ll drop a few pics below that show how it looks on the inside.
You also get to review previously recorded footage and can access the ‘talk & listen’ feature. Whenever watching the live feed, you can simply talk to anyone through the security camera. If you’re interested how much the Nest Aware subscription costs, the first month is free and renewing is $10/monthly (that’s the cheapest one).
If you have other Nest devices installed, they’ll show up on the opening screen along with your Nest Cam. In brief, Nest’s mobile application is clean, intuitive, well-made and functional. It never bugs or crashes, it’s reliable and sends detailed notifications.
6. Advantages and Disadvantages
Besides everything we’ve talked about, it’s important to know the pros and cons of these security cameras to identify what Canary and Nest have and what they lack. Hence we’ve created two charts that list all the advantages and disadvantages of Canary All-in-One and Nest Cam.

Both of these security cameras have pretty good pros, and, compared their competitors, Canary and Nest take the top spot. With all those unique characteristics and strong features, it’s not surprising that both of them are best-selling products.
People who are new to the smart home game sometimes need help with their new devices, perhaps during a setup process or when troubleshooting. If they fail to find the answer they’ve been looking for in the user’s manual or YouTube and community forums, the next best option is reaching out to the support team.
Luckily, both Nest and Canary have superb customer care. I’ve reached out to both and asked a lot of questions. As expected, responses were timely, professional and comprehensive.
Before concluding our article, here is a detailed chart where we compare these two security cameras in every critical aspect.
So that’s pretty much everything we can include in the chart. While Canary and Nest Cam share the majority of the features, the main difference between these two is quality. We need to know that the security camera we’re about to purchase is reliable: how well it functions, operates and delivers.
Nest Cam is the most reliable security camera on the market. Canary All-in-One has a beautiful set of features, but it’s not a security camera we’d like to depend on.
It has a lot of small bugs, and until all are resolved, it would be better to focus on security cameras that have proven their worth.
The Bottom Line
Both Canary and Nest Cam are good security cameras that have amazing features and capabilities. These two are best-selling products and have thousands of satisfied customers. Purchasing either of these two can be an excellent addition to your smart home arsenal.
Still, if you want to buy an industry-leading product, Nest Cam Indoor is the way to go. It’s secure, reliable, functional, good-looking and continually improving.
If you also purchase the Nest Aware subscription, your Nest Cam will instantly become smarter and more effective. As for the third-party integration friendliness, Nest Cam works with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, IFTTT and other major names in the smart home industry.
So, to conclude, if you want to purchase the industry-leading security camera, Nest Cam Indoor is the way to go. It will not disappoint and most probably will exceed your expectations.
